About Leslie Kain

I was always writing something when I was a kid – fantasies, poems, essays, plays, secret plans; culminating in running away across country at fifteen, never looking back. But in my careers (psychology, business, Government Intelligence, nonprofits), my writing was limited to nonfiction: professional, technical, research. Finally dabbling in fiction during spare moments above the clouds, my short stories found their way into literary journals and anthologies. I developed personal relationships with my characters, who relentlessly nagged me into longer stories. My debut novel, ‘Secrets In The Mirror’ was published by Atmosphere Press September 2022, and its sequel What Lies Buried (Book 2 of the DiMasi Family Trilogy) was released May 2024. The third/final book of the DiMasi family trilogy, Power Play‘, is expected late 2025. A fourth book (standalone, unless my character demands a sequel), Finding Harmonyis scheduled for 2026.
I earned degrees from Wellesley College and Boston University, and leverage my education, training and experience in psychology to write stories of inner conflict and emotional transformation. Originally from “all over” the U.S. (although I prefer to claim Boston), I now reside in Mexico with my husband. We lost my writing buddy cat Sheba (who’d become blind) recently at age 18.

For many people, psychological undercurrents hold deep secrets behind their public persona. Experiences from childhood, family, and beyond impact behavior, choices, fears, attitudes and life goals. The path to achieving objectives can be strewn with challenges or even danger, but the most difficult obstacles lie within the character. One person may become happy and successful, while another develops a mental illness; one withdraws to become a recluse; another is a thief or murderer … What is the etiology of such differences? How, if at all, can anyone carve out their unique identity and become the person they want to be, even in the face of early trauma or tragedy?
